Takara

Takara logo

Takara was a United States-market bicycle marque combining American distributor specifications with Japanese frame production across city, touring, road, and BMX models.

Company history

Takara was organised around 1973 by a group of American regional bicycle distributors led by Bob Moore and Lee Connor. Mitsui Trading Company coordinated manufacturing in Japan, principally through Kuwahara, for a range extending from three-speed utility bicycles to high-specification road racers. The brand was sold nationally during the American bike boom and remained in distribution until rising yen costs made Japanese production less competitive in the late 1980s.
