Rover Company

Rover was a Coventry manufacturer whose chain-driven Rover Safety Bicycle became the influential blueprint for the modern bicycle before the company expanded into motorcycles and cars.
Company history
John Kemp Starley and William Sutton founded Starley & Sutton as bicycle manufacturers in Coventry in 1878. Starley's 1885 Rover Safety Bicycle used similar-sized wheels and rear chain drive, a layout that shaped the modern bicycle. The business later became the Rover Cycle Company and then Rover Company, which ceased to be independent in 1967.
