Heron
Heron Bicycles is an American marque for traditional lugged, silver-brazed steel road, touring, randonneur, and all-rounder frames designed for comfort, versatility, and long service life.
Company history
Heron Bicycles began in 1997 as a joint venture among Waterford Precision Cycles, Rivendell Bicycle Works, and Rona Components. Waterford built the frames in Wisconsin while Rivendell handled early mail-order sales. Rona owner Ted Durant later became sole owner, and Todd Kuzma acquired the marque in January 2002, resuming Waterford production. Manufacturing paused in 2007 after Kuzma changed careers; Bicycle Classics subsequently acquired Heron and developed the Sportif, a front-load-oriented, low-trail, lugged-steel all-rounder using Reynolds 531 tubing and carefully selected classic fittings. Across its ownership changes, Heron has remained associated with understated American-built steel frames, practical clearances, balanced fit, and repairable long-lived construction.
