Fat City Cycles

Fat City Cycles logo

Fat City Cycles was a pioneering American mountain-bike workshop whose lively Fat Chance, Yo Eddy, Wicked, Monster Fat, Slim Chance, and Shock-a-Billy frames defined an East Coast school of responsive handmade bicycles.

Company history

Framebuilder Chris Chance began making custom road and touring bicycles in 1977 and founded Fat City Cycles in Somerville after turning his attention to mountain bikes in 1982. The workshop became known for lightweight TIG-welded and fillet-brazed steel, custom True Temper tubing, colourful finishes, irreverent advertising, and compact, quick-handling geometry suited to rocky eastern trails. Models including the Fat Chance, Wicked, Team Comp, Yo Eddy, Slim Chance, and full-suspension Shock-a-Billy built a devoted following and helped train craftspeople who later formed other influential manufacturers. Fat City was sold and moved to South Glens Falls, New York, in 1994, leaving several Somerville employees to establish Independent Fabrication; the original line ended in 1999. Chance revived the Fat Chance lineage as a separate company in 2015.
